Haley Warden Earns All-America Honors by Coaches and Media

2017 May 24

James Madison junior midfielder Haley Warden earned All-America status for the first time in her career, as she was named Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Third Team All-American and Inside Lacrosse Media Second Team All-American, the organizations announced on May 17.

"Haley deserves to be recognized at this level, and I am so proud of her that she was," Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe said. "She consistently dominated all over the field all season long against one of the toughest schedules in the nation."

While Warden was a part of Inside Lacrosse's inaugural All-American team, she collected the program's 55th IWLCA All-America award dating back to 1981. The Glen Mills native is the first JMU midfielder to be named an All-American since Kim Griffin's Second Team honor in 2010.

She was voted the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, marking the 13th time a JMU player has received the league's top award. In addition to earning First Team All-CAA status, she led the Dukes to their 10th CAA tournament title on her way to being the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Performer.

This season, Warden scored 28 goals and added eight assists for 36 points. She was JMU's leader in the midfield and defensive third, tallying 69 draw controls, 47 caused turnovers and 52 ground balls. She set the single-season school record for caused turnovers while matching the JMU mark for draw controls.

Warden ranked third in the CAA in caused turnovers per game (2.24) and draws per game (3.29) and was fourth in ground balls per outing (2.48). She also ranks 14th nationally in caused turnovers.

She tallied 15 games with eight or more hustle stats in 2017, leading JMU's return to defensive prominence in which the team had a +6.0 scoring margin during conference play (13.67 - 7.67). JMU's defensive unit ranks 10th in Division I in overall scoring defense (8.95) and 14th in caused turnovers (10.95).

Warden was one of four CAA student-athletes to be honored either by the IWLCA or Inside Lacrosse and one of two players to make both All-American teams.

"It's a big deal for the CAA and JMU to produce All-Americans," Klaes-Bawcombe said. "This 2017 team was so wonderful to work with and the fact they are awarded with an All-American is a huge compliment to their hard work and unselfishness."
