Megan Good of Mount Sidney Named Finalist for Softball Honda Sport Award

2017 Jul 6

Postseason honors continue to pour in for James Madison softball's Megan Good as the junior was named as one of four nominees for the Honda Sport Award for Softball, Executive Director of Collegiate Women Sports Award (CWSA) Chris Voelz announced on Monday.

The honor is added to a staggering list of accolades that Good has received over her junior campaign. Earlier this month, she was unanimously selected as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association First Team All-American and was one three finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She became the first student-athlete in Colonial Athletic Association history to ever be named Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season. She was selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and secured All-CAA, NFCA All-Northeast Region and All-ECAC First Team honors while being named the Most Outstanding Performer during the 2017 CAA Championships as she led JMU to its second consecutive conference title.

Good leads the nation with a 38-3 record in the circle, setting JMU's single-season wins record. She has also tallied a nation-best 14 shutouts, which helped JMU to a program-high 28 shutouts over the 2017 season. Her 0.63 ERA is a JMU single-season low and is also the third-lowest mark in all of Division I softball. Her ERA was helped by a scoreless inning streak of 70.1 innings, the 11th-longest streak in NCAA history and the longest streak by any player since 2009.

Over 244.2 innings of work, Good has allowed just 22 earned runs off 125 hits and 35 walks while striking out 271 batters. Earlier this season, Good became JMU's all-time leader for wins in the circle, closing her junior season with a 99-9 career mark. In the circle, Good has either tied or set a total of 13 single-season pitching records this season including ERA, batting average against (.147), walks allowed per seven innings (1.00), wins, appearances (44), starts (43), complete games (23), shutouts, combined shutouts (8), innings pitched, strikeouts, batters faced (916) and at bats against (853).

Dangerous on both sides of the ball, Good also led JMU at the plate with a .383 average with a career-best 69 hits. She led the CAA with 58 RBIs, the third-most over a single season in JMU history. She also led the Dukes with 17 multi-RBI games while closing the season with 19 multi-hit outings. She's knocked 11 doubles and a team-high 12 home runs for a .644 slugging percentage, the second-highest mark in the conference. Aided by 28 walks, Good closed the year with a .464 on-base percentage.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 41 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2017 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on the CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 26.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the NFCA. The Honda Sport award winner for softball will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 41 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
