Megan Good of Mount Sidney Named Top Three Finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year

2017 Jul 6

Behind her record-breaking junior season, James Madison softball's Megan Good has been selected as one of three finalists for 2017 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, as announced by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.

Good has been a Top 25 finalist over her first two seasons as a Duke, making the Top 10 cut her sophomore season. This is the first time a JMU student-athlete has been named a top three finalist for the honor. Good is joined in the top three by 2017 Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year Kelly Barnhill of Florida and 2017 SEC Player of Year Meghan Gregg of Tennessee. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, May 30 at the team-only banquet held prior to the start of the 2017 Women's College World Series.

The honor is one of several Good has racked up over the 2017 season. Earlier this month, she became the first student-athlete in Colonial Athletic Association history to ever be named Pitcher and Player of the Year. She also racked up All-CAA and NFCA All-Northeast Region First Team accolades, and was named Most Outstanding Performer at the 2017 CAA Championship after helping JMU to back-to-back conference titles for the first time in program history.

Good leads the nation with a 38-3 record in the circle, setting JMU's single-season wins record. She has also tallied a nation-best 14 shutouts, which helped JMU to a program-high 28 shutouts over the 2017 season. Her 0.63 ERA is a JMU single-season low and is also the third-lowest mark in all of Division I softball. Her ERA was helped by a scoreless inning streak of 70.1 innings, the 11th-longest streak in NCAA history and the longest streak by any player since 2009.

Over 244.2 innings of work, Good has allowed just 22 earned runs off 125 hits and 35 walks while striking out a staggering 271 batters. Earlier this season, Good became JMU's all-time leader for wins in the circle, closing her junior season with a 99-9 career mark. Over her 2017 campaign, Good tossed her fourth career no-hitter against (RV) South Alabama and blanked then-ranked No. 2 Auburn, the first time the Tigers have been shut out since the 2015 season.

In the circle, Good has either tied or set a total of 13 single-season pitching records this season including ERA, batting average against (.147), walks allowed per seven innings (1.00), wins, appearances (44), starts (43), complete games (23), shutouts, combined shutouts (8), innings pitched, strikeouts, batters faced (916) and at bats against (853).

Dangerous on both sides of the ball, Good also led JMU at the plate with a .383 average with a career-best 69 hits. She led the CAA with 58 RBIs, the third-most over a single season in JMU history. She also led the Dukes with 17 multi-RBI games while closing the season with 19 multi-hit outings. She's knocked 11 doubles and a team-high 12 home runs for a .644 slugging percentage, the second-highest mark in the conference. Aided by 28 walks, Good closed the year with a .464 on-base percentage.

JMU made its fifth consecutive postseason appearance as the Dukes were selected to the Waco Regional hosted by No. 15 Baylor. The Dukes fell to the Bears in the Waco Regional title game to end the season with a 52-8 record, the most wins over a single season in JMU history.
